Who are the Best Copywriters in Yorkshire?

Sarah, looking away from the camera, smiling

Copywriting is an essential part of modern marketing. It’s got the power to turn a mediocre campaign into a roaring success.

I meet lots of potential clients through my business network and from referrals from happy clients. And because it’s critical for both parties to get the right fit when working on copy projects, I always recommend having a look around at some of the other copywriters in the area.

Yes, they’re my ‘competitors,’ but each of the writers has specific skills and work with different types of client. I’m not one to shy away from being honest. In reality, I’m just saving you a little time on Google as you’d find them anyway!

The best copywriters are those who can captivate an audience, provoke emotion and drive action. It’s what copywriting's all about. Weaving nice stories and using clever words is useless if it doesn’t make the audience take action!

Anyway, I digress… Not every copywriter is a fit for every business. In Yorkshire, there’s no shortage of talented copywriters. And if I’m not the perfect fit for you, I’ve put together a helpful list of some respected copywriters from Yorkshire to help you in your search for your perfect copy partner.

What makes the best copywriters in Yorkshire?

Firstly, let's define what makes a great copywriter. A top-notch copywriter is someone who has an understanding of what makes people tick. They craft messages that resonate with their target audience. Successful copywriters, in my opinion, do this by talking about the benefits of the product or service.

They don’t talk about features – what the product is or does – they talk about what it will mean to the

target audience. How it will make them feel; how it will fulfill the need they have – whatever that need is. They understand what the problems are that people experience and write to show how a product or service will fix those problems.

Now, it might be that the audience wants a CCTV security system. But the underlying fact is that the audience wants to keep their family and home safe. So, the best copywriters drill down to the deep benefits of the product offering and write to that need.

Obviously, they’ve also got to have great writing skills and must be able to interpret and write in the tone of voice of the client. They also need to be able to share complex ideas in a simple and compelling way. A great copywriter is also a strategic thinker, always looking for ways to make their copy more effective and impactful.

With this in mind, let's take a look at some of the best copywriters in Yorkshire (in no particular order!):

Natalie Elvin Copywriting.

Natalie works particularly well with education and charitable organisations to pin down their messaging, increasing their brand visibility and impact. She also works with creatives like interior designers and beauty brands as well as digital agencies.

Wordsmith Copywriting.

David Gibson works with all businesses from SME to PLC (see what I did there?). With an impressive portfolio of clients, David can turn his hand to PR planning and campaigns, comms and copy for all channels.

Ink Gardener Copywriting.

Helen Reynolds is a freelance copywriter based in York. With a great reputation, Helen specialises in heritage, hospitality and health. A Cambridge graduate with a background in business, Helen launched her copywriting career in 2014 and has over 25 years of digital experience – so she knows what works.

Hairy Cow Copywriting.

Jen Moore is another copywriter from York and she loves to work with small businesses that are full of character. She’s known for her ability to bring a brand's message to life in a way that is both engaging and memorable. She’s also a grammar geek!

So, here are four companies to consider if you’re looking for a copywriter in Yorkshire. As I say, not every copywriter is a perfect fit for every business, so it’s good to have some options. You’ve got to ‘connect’ and be able to communicate from the word ‘go.’
